Each of Liberia’s fifteen counties is governed through a tripartite leadership structure comprising.
Superintendent:
Appointed by the President, the Superintendent serves as the chief administrative officer of the county. They oversee local governance, development initiatives, and coordination between national and local institutions. The superintendent is the county’s executive and chief administrator.
Senior Senator:
Elected to a nine-year term, the Senior Senator represents the county in the Liberian Senate. They are typically the more tenured of the two senators and play a key role in national legislation, budget approval, and oversight.
Junior Senator:
Also elected for nine years, the Junior Senator serves alongside the Senior Senator . The Junior Senator focuses on representation, oversight, and coordination with local communities to ensure accountability and effective governance.
Collective Role
– The trio collaborates to align local development with national policies, mobilize resources, and address community needs.
– They engage with traditional authorities, civil society, and residents to promote transparency, participation, and sustainable growth across the county balancing executive administration with legislative advocacy.
