Liberia Districts Overview | Local Governance & Development Profiles

Welcome to LiberiaData’s Districts Introduction Page, your authoritative source for structured, searchable, and up-to-date information on Liberia’s administrative and electoral districts. This page offers a comprehensive introduction to the country’s district-level governance, leadership, and development landscape and all you need to know about the districts of Liberia.

What Are Liberia’s Districts?

Liberia is divided into 15 counties, each further segmented into elective, administrative and statutory districts. These districts serve as the foundational units for local governance, public service delivery, and community development. Understanding district structures is essential for tracking progress, identifying leadership, and engaging with national and local initiatives.

Who Leads the Districts?

Each district is guided by two key leadership roles:

District Commissioner (Local Administration)

  • Appointed by the Ministry of Internal Affairs
  • Oversees local governance, service delivery, and development coordination
  • Leads district administrative teams including finance, planning, and health officers
  • Works with District Advisory Councils to implement national policies at the local level

District Representative to Parliament (Legislative Advocacy)

  • Elected by district constituents to the House of Representatives
  • Advocates for district interests at the national level
  • Proposes and votes on legislation, including budget allocations and development priorities
  • Plays a critical role in shaping national laws that affect local communities
